| Gary Mayerson’s new book for parents, How To Compromise With
Your School District Without Compromising Your Child (DRL Books 2004) was
released in late August. The book offers practical suggestions and
strategies for parents to use in an effort to level the playing field and
(hopefully) avoid having to go to an impartial hearing.
Among other things, the book offers parents examples of letters that
parents can readily adapt to request independent evaluations at district
expense, request additional services, make objections, or accept services on
a “without prejudice” basis. The book also shows parents how to make an
effective “record” and how to handle difficult IEP meetings and situations.
If going to due process proves unavoidable, these same practical strategies
will help parents prepare for their child’s hearing and avoid the kinds of
pitfalls that can plague a case from the start.
The back cover of the book contains supportive reviews from Dr. O. Ivar
Lovaas, Dr. Sabrina Freeman, Dr. Carl Sundberg, Dr. Bridget Taylor and
Cecelia McCarton, M.D. Dr. Bridget Taylor, the Co-Founder of the Alpine
Learning Group, had this to say: “Mayerson’s ‘Field Guide’ fills a critical
gap for parents of children with developmental disorders and learning
disabilities, offering struggling parents invaluable tips on protecting the
integrity of their child’s educational programming. Throughout the ongoing
process of negotiating the best education for their child, parents will find
themselves reaching for this book again and again.”
On February 24, 2005, Gary was interviewed with his book on the Today
Show (NBC) by Katie Couric. The Today Show interview was part of NBC's
week-long series on autism, and focused on the practical strategies that
parents can employ in an effort to level the playing field and avoid having
to go to due process. On April 24, 2005, the New York Times ran an article
on the first page of the Metro Section concerning the Town of Westport,
Connecticut entitled "Amid Affluence--A Struggle Over Special Education."
The first paragraph of the article reads as follows: "Legal Issues In School
Health Services, all 662 pages of it, is a popular read among school
administrators in this wealthy town on the Long Island Sound. Parents,
however, are more likely to be poring over Gary Mayerson's 'How To
Compromise With Your School District Without Compromising Your Child'......"
How To Compromise With Your School District Without Compromising Your
Child retails for $24.95 and is available directly
